President Donald Trump delivered his first State of the Union Address Tuesday night, staying mostly on script and delivering a bipartisan message. Nick Paliewicz, an University of Louisville Associate Professor in the Office of Communications wasn’t surprised by his tone throughout the speech.
I think in some ways Trump was trying to be conciliatory and his tone was a little more softer than some of his more bombastic rhetorical styles of the past. But I think overall his rhetorical styles and motivations were consistent as to how they have been in the past and no real surprises. So what I mean is what Trump was more or less doing, to me, was he was painting this broad metanarrative of not just what it means to be an American, but how it feels to be an American.” Paliewicz said.
